How much do you know about brake discs?

Update time:2023-01-16
A brake disc, also known as a rotor, is a component of a vehicle's braking system that is located at the wheel hub. It rotates along with the wheel and is designed to stop the vehicle by applying friction to the brake pads.
The brake disc typically consists of a metal disc with a smooth surface, which is attached to the wheel hub. When the brake pedal is pressed, brake pads mounted on a brake caliper clamp onto the disc, creating friction which slows down and stops the rotation of the wheel.
There are different types of brake discs available on the market, such as:
Vented brake disc: This type of brake disc has small channels or "vents" that allow for better heat dissipation and cooling.
Solid brake disc: This type of brake disc is a solid piece of metal with no channels or vents. It is typically used on smaller vehicles and motorcycles.
Drilled brake disc: This type of brake disc has small holes drilled into it to improve cooling and reduce weight.
Slotted brake disc: This type of brake disc has grooves or slots cut into it to help remove dust and debris, which can improve the brake's performance.
Brake discs are designed to withstand the high temperatures and stresses generated during braking, and are typically made of durable materials such as cast iron or steel. They should be inspected and replaced if they show signs of wear such as grooving, warping, or cracking.
